■ A2O LITE's ‘NEON’ Tops Charts with Debut Single: Yoo Young-jin and Lee Soo-man Reunite

A2O LITE made its debut on October 13 with the digital single ‘NEON’. Just 29 hours after its release, the song climbed to No. 1 on Melon's TOP100 chart at 11 PM on October 14. It marked the fastest time for a debut song to reach the top spot since Melon's TOP100 chart was revamped in 2021. Surpassing the previous record set by ALLDAY PROJECT's ‘FAMOUS’, the rookie group achieved an exceptional milestone.

The momentum of ‘NEON’ did not stop there. The song maintained its No. 1 position on Melon's TOP100 for six consecutive days, while A2O LITE also secured its first music show win just one week after debut. The track topped Spotify's Korea chart and YouTube Music's music video chart, while also achieving notable results on Apple Music's global chart and China's QQ Music. With a single debut release, A2O LITE quickly established its presence on both domestic and international charts, becoming one of the industry's most talked-about newcomers.

As ‘NEON’ gained popularity, attention also turned to Yoo Young-jin, whose name appears in the song's credits. Working alongside Dem Jointz, Yoo participated in writing, composing, and arranging the track, while also handling directing, mixing, recording, and background vocals. The project is particularly meaningful as it marks a renewed collaboration between Yoo and Lee Soo-man, who spent many years creating music together at SM before reuniting at A2O.

For fans who remember Yoo Young-jin's work through generations of SM artists, the collaboration is a welcome development. His decades of musical experience have found a new expression through a new artist. But what kind of music has allowed Yoo Young-jin to leave his mark on so many generations of K-POP?

■ From H.O.T. to Red Velvet: The Producer Who Helped Shape SM's Musical History

Yoo Young-jin helped establish the foundations of SM's idol music through songs such as H.O.T.'s ‘Warrior's Descendant’. Combining socially conscious lyrics, powerful beats, and performance-driven arrangements, his music introduced a new direction for idol groups at the time. He subsequently expanded the musical range of SM artists through his involvement in writing, composing, and arranging songs such as Shinhwa's ‘T.O.P.’.

By the mid-2000s, Yoo's music had taken on an even more powerful sound through his work with TVXQ!. Songs such as ‘Rising Sun’ and ‘O-正.反.合.’ combined dramatic musical arrangements, intense beats, and dynamic performances, becoming defining examples of SMP (SM Music Performance).

One of the highlights of this period was ‘MIROTIC’, released in 2008. With its addictive melody, polished beat, and controlled performance style, the song helped establish TVXQ!'s presence on the global stage. Yoo contributed to the Korean lyrics and arrangement, playing a role in shaping the track's distinctive sound.

Super Junior's ‘Sorry, Sorry’ achieved widespread popularity through its repetitive chorus and simple, catchy rhythm. Yoo participated in writing, composing, and arranging the song, while the choreography built around its rhythm attracted fans worldwide. SHINee's ‘Ring Ding Dong’, another track for which Yoo contributed lyrics, composition, and arrangement, became one of the group's signature hits with its repetitive hook and powerful beat.

EXO, which debuted in 2012, carried Yoo Young-jin's musical influence into a new generation. The group's debut song ‘MAMA’ introduced its fictional universe through grand musical arrangements and intense performances. EXO subsequently achieved widespread popularity with signature hits such as ‘Growl’, establishing itself as one of K-POP's leading groups.

Yoo's work also continued through NCT. NCT U's ‘Baby Don't Stop’ highlighted the members' performances with its minimalist arrangement and sophisticated sound. Yoo contributed to the song's composition and arrangement, while the lyrics were written by Park Woo-hyun, JUNO, and TAEYONG. He also participated in composing, arranging, and vocal directing for NCT 127's ‘Kick It’, helping shape the group's powerful musical identity.

For Red Velvet's ‘Bad Boy’, Yoo contributed to the composition. Combining a sophisticated R&B-based sound with Red Velvet's distinctive musical sensibilities, the track demonstrated that his musical range extended well beyond the powerful, performance-centered style associated with SMP.

■ Leaving SM Alongside Lee Soo-man: The Beginning of a New Musical Chapter

The longstanding collaboration between Yoo Young-jin and Lee Soo-man reached a turning point with their departure from SM. When SM announced its SM 3.0 vision in 2023, excluding Lee Soo-man from its production structure, Yoo publicly expressed his disagreement with the decision. He subsequently left SM alongside Lee, marking a new phase in their decades-long musical partnership.

For fans who had followed Yoo's work through SM artists, the change was significant. After years of helping define the agency's sound, his name was no longer as commonly seen in the credits of new SM releases.

Yet Yoo Young-jin's musical journey was far from over. Reuniting with Lee Soo-man at A2O, he has returned with new music, continuing the creative partnership that helped shape generations of K-POP.
