[Hanteo News = Reporter KIM YEONWOO] NMIXX has made its presence felt on the digital music charts immediately following its comeback with the new song ‘긴 소원 (Birthday Wish)’. The title track of the group's sixth mini-album ‘Strange Muse’, released on October 19, debuted at No. 34 on Melon's TOP100 chart before climbing to No. 5 as of midnight the following day. Its debut position marked the group's highest chart entry to date.

Although NMIXX sought to distinguish itself with a unique musical identity from the beginning, gaining mainstream attention and achieving commercial success took time. Now, the group is proving its place in the industry with consecutive chart successes and even a Grand Prize at a music awards ceremony. How has NMIXX, known for its experimental sound and strong musical fundamentals, gradually broadened its mainstream appeal while establishing an increasingly distinct identity? 

Where NMIXX Stands Today, ‘긴 소원 (Birthday Wish)’

‘긴 소원 (Birthday Wish)’ is a pop track that blends moombahton, Afro, and future house influences. The song stands out for its dramatic progression, moving between stripped-down sections featuring only piano and vocals and moments of powerful, intense sound. While maintaining NMIXX's signature approach of shifting between genres and moods within a single track, it also conveys a cohesive narrative through its melodies and emotional progression.

The album also marks the first time since debut that NMIXX has introduced member unit tracks. LILY and HAEWON, SULLYOON and BAE, and JIWOO and KYUJIN showcase different sides of their musical personalities through three distinct pairings, with the members also contributing to the lyrics of their respective unit songs. LILY received a songwriting credit for the B-side track ‘RudE TaLK’, while KYUJIN took on composition for the first time. These efforts reflect the group's desire to expand its musical range while highlighting each member's individuality.

Beyond musical achievements, NMIXX's ability to connect emotionally with fans remains another strength. In a written interview, HAEWON shared, "I hope the overwhelming yet precious emotions we felt in that moment when we first came face to face with each other reach all of you as well." Alongside music and performances, sharing meaningful emotions with fans has become another way for NMIXX to shape its distinct identity.
 

MIXX POP, An Unfamiliar Sound and a Challenging Beginning

NMIXX entered the music scene in February 2022 with its debut single ‘AD MARE’, establishing a distinctive musical direction from the outset with the title track ‘O.O’. The group's signature genre, "MIXX POP," which shifts between contrasting musical styles within a single song, was central to its strategy for standing out. However, this departure from conventional song structures struck listeners as both refreshing and unfamiliar.

Through subsequent releases such as ‘DICE’, ‘Love Me Like This’, and ‘DASH’, NMIXX continued developing its own musical language. ‘DASH’, in particular, brought the appeal of MIXX POP into sharper focus by combining genre-shifting arrangements with the members' strong vocals and performances. Yet musical experimentation did not always translate into commercial success. Despite debuting under major agency JYP ENTERTAINMENT, the group initially struggled to achieve results that matched expectations.

With multiple genres woven into a single track, NMIXX's music was not always easy for listeners to embrace on the first listen. The experimental structures that set the group apart also presented a barrier to broader mainstream acceptance. Although the members' abilities were widely recognized, it took time for those strengths to resonate with a larger audience.
 

 Proving Their Talent and Connecting Through Music

Several factors contributed to NMIXX's growing mainstream appeal. In the spring of 2024, as public interest in K-POP idols' live singing abilities intensified, NMIXX showcased its vocal strengths through university festivals and various live performances. SULLYOON attracted attention for her visuals, while HAEWON helped raise the group's profile as the host of the second season of the YouTube variety show ‘Workdol’. Through both musical performances and entertainment content, the members gained recognition for their diverse individual charms.

However, NMIXX's growth cannot be attributed simply to increased public exposure. While greater visibility introduced the group to new audiences, it was ultimately the members' abilities and their commitment to consistently presenting their own music that transformed that attention into genuine appreciation. Their strong live performance skills, evident since debut, played an important role, as did their determination to maintain a distinct musical direction despite repeatedly experimenting with unfamiliar genres.

This progress became particularly evident in the group's digital music performance. ‘Blue Valentine’, the title track of NMIXX's first full-length album released in October 2025, achieved strong results on domestic music charts and marked a new turning point for the group. The positive reception continued with ‘Heavy Serenade’, the title track of its fifth mini-album released in May this year, extending the group's streak of successful releases.

Both songs are significant because NMIXX expanded its mainstream appeal without abandoning its established musical identity. While retaining contrasting genres and dramatic arrangements, the group placed greater emphasis on melodies and emotional expression to communicate each song's appeal. Rather than limiting MIXX POP's experimental nature to abrupt genre changes, NMIXX developed its sound in a direction that allowed the members' vocals and the songs' emotional depth to shine together. It was the result of continuously refining its music to make its distinctive style more accessible while remaining true to its artistic foundation.

This growth also earned recognition at major music awards. At the ‘2026 THE FACT MUSIC AWARDS’ held in September, NMIXX received the Grand Prize for "Sound of the Year," marking the group's first-ever Grand Prize at a music awards ceremony since its debut. Although winning over the broader public took time, the group's years of dedication, musical ability, and artistic sincerity ultimately translated into tangible achievements.

Rather than abandoning its distinctive sound, NMIXX chose to refine it and bring its identity into sharper focus. Its experimental music, combined with the members' vocal abilities and expressive performances, became a defining strength. That individuality, in turn, helped the group connect with a wider audience.

The continued momentum surrounding ‘긴 소원 (Birthday Wish)’ represents another step in NMIXX's journey to explore new possibilities while staying true to its musical identity. Now in its fifth year since debut, the group has established a clearer sense of who it is as an artist, raising anticipation for the music it will deliver next.
