[Hanteo News = Reporter KANG SUYOUNG] They were not without awkward moments, but that made them all the more lovable. As if unfamiliar with microphones, their voices were a little loud, and the moment they left the stage after their final greetings, “thank you” continued endlessly like a round song. It was a moment where the excited, nervous, and confident hearts of seven girls could be felt exactly as they were.
TUIDE held a showcase for the release of its 1st mini album ‘TUNE & PLAY’ at YES24 Live Hall on the 24th and talked about the new album. Seven members with different backgrounds, including U.S.-born ELENA, Japan-born SAKI, and SEOYEON, the younger sister of TWICE’s JIHYO, stood before the world for the first time. What they all put forward in common was one thing: not fitting their differences into one mold, but keeping them alive.
TUIDE’s musical identity is “soultronic.” The seven girls shared their ambition to flexibly move across various genres, centered on “soultronic,” which combines the warm sentiment of soul with the sophistication of electronic music.
“If you listen to the five songs on our debut album, you will feel that they are all bright and full of energy, while also somehow relaxed and languid. I think music where vitality and ease coexist like this is TUIDE’s soultronic.” (JIA)
“We thought it was the genre that could best represent TUIDE because it can flexibly tune different genres into one and contain the seven members’ different personalities in one piece of music.” (SEOHEE)
“To add to what SEOHEE unnie said, I think the charm of soultronic is that it captures our vocal tones well through our voices.” (SAKI)
What confirmed that identity was their work with producer GroovyRoom. SEOHEE said, “We grew up listening to the music of producer GroovyRoom, so it was an honor,” and shared a memorable compliment they received.
“They told us that since each member has a different and distinctive vocal tone, we do not need to try to create something new, and that the team’s charm comes through well when we express ourselves naturally as we are. I also thought that those words seemed to be TUIDE’s team identity.” (SEOHEE)
The moment they first received the choreography draft for the title track ‘SUN KISS’ remains deeply in the members’ memories. YI HANI said, “When I first saw the choreography draft for SUN KISS, it felt like I was seeing a gift that suited us so well,” adding, “The fact that we would be able to show such a wonderful stage felt truly overwhelming, and I remember that feeling made all of us cry together.”
The performance was completed in a direction that does not force each member’s individuality into one mold. SEOYEON said, “Since the choreography itself flows mainly through groove movements that show each person’s individuality well, we thought hard about everything from our expressions and gestures to even our breathing.” SEOHEE explained, “We tried to harmoniously bring together each person’s individuality while carefully controlling the parts where we had to add strength and the parts where we had to express ease.”
The members’ backgrounds were all different. ELENA enjoyed singing R&B from a young age, SAKI came from Japan with the dream of debuting in Korea, and SEOYEON was cast at a dance academy. SEOYEON had a special source of support. Her older sister, TWICE’s JIHYO, told her, “The people you will see more often than family are your members, so I hope you will trust and rely on them, become a support for one another, and carry out activities beautifully together.”
Producer HAN SUNGSOO’s advice was along the same lines. ELENA said, “He told us that it is important to find fun even during the practice process, and that left an impression on me,” adding, “We believe that if we enjoy the stage, our energy will also be delivered to those watching, so we are working hard and doing our best.”
When asked to describe TUIDE in one word, the members gave different answers, but they all pointed in the same direction. It was about approaching the world as they naturally are, without something made up or artificial.
“I want to choose the word joy as a keyword. From preparing for the stage to actually standing on stage, we had many joyful experiences, and I want to deliver those experiences to everyone watching. That is why I want to choose the keyword joy.” (SEOYEON)
“I want to express us with the keyword vivid. That is because I think all seven of us have clear and distinct personalities. Rather than fitting those different personalities into one, TUIDE is about bringing them together harmoniously while keeping each person’s individuality alive. Of course, there are many wonderful senior artists, but we have not set a specific role model for our team yet. That is because TUIDE has the goal of creating TUIDE’s own color well going forward.” (SEOYEON)
“I would like to describe it as ease. This album carries the message of sharing your own rhythm and enjoying that moment together. All five tracks are full of energy, but can also be enjoyed without pressure, so I hope people can enjoy a sense of ease with our music even in their busy daily lives.” (SEAH)
SEOYEON used the meaning of the team name to express their debut ambition.
“Just like the meaning of our team name, ‘tune the tide,’ we will become a team that tunes the world and makes it joyful.”
TUIDE’s 1st mini album ‘TUNE & PLAY’ will be released at 6 PM on this day. The moment seven different colors are tuned into one piece of music, TUIDE’s own soultronic will begin.
