This year, the music industry is drawing attention as idols who once defined past eras are returning to the stage one after another. From SeeYa, a representative ballad group of the 2000s, to project girl group I.O.I and 2nd-generation idol group BOYFRIEND. Marking their 20th, 10th, and 15th debut anniversaries, respectively, their reappearances go beyond simple comebacks and can be read as examples showing how long K-POP can remain alive in fans’ memories as a culture.
I.O.I is a project girl group formed through Mnet’s survival program 'Produce 101' in 2016. The nine-member group, consisting of LIM NAYOUNG, CHUNG HA, KIM SEJEONG, JUNG CHAEYEON, KIM SOHYE, YOO YEONJUNG, CHOI YOOJUNG, KIM DOYEON, and JEON SOMI, gained great popularity with songs such as ‘Dream Girls’ and ‘Very Very Very,’ quickly standing at the center of the K-POP scene. However, due to the nature of being a project group, the members concluded their official activities in 2017 when their contracts ended.
Since then, the members continued their careers in their respective positions as solo artists, actors, and more. Marking their 10th debut anniversary, they gathered together again for the first time in nine years, except for ZHOU JIEQIONG and KANG MINA, who were absent due to individual schedules. I.O.I officially made its comeback by releasing its 3rd mini album I.O.I : LOOP on May 19, with the members directly participating in the song production to enhance the album’s musical completeness. From May 29 to 31, they held '2026 I.O.I Concert Tour: LOOP' at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul, and are continuing their reunion with global fans through a tour of major Asian cities, including Bangkok and Hong Kong. Going beyond the limitations of a project group, I.O.I has now become a name that symbolizes the memories of a continuing fandom, not a “team that only existed briefly.”
SeeYa is a three-member vocal girl group that debuted on March 12, 2006, and played a major role in emotional ballads of the mid-to-late 2000s with songs such as 'Scent of a Woman,' 'Love’s Greeting,' 'Crazy Love Song,' and 'His Voice.' Consisting of KIM YEONJI, LEE BORAM, and NAM GYURI, the group received public love for its outstanding vocal ability and exceptional harmony, but stayed away from the stage for a long time after ending team activities.
Marking its 20th debut anniversary, SeeYa reunited by establishing its own agency, SeeYa Entertainment, and confirmed its first full-group comeback in 15 years by releasing its 4th full-length album First, Again on May 14. The group is also beginning its reunion with fans in earnest by announcing its nationwide tour concert 'THE FAN.' BTS member V also drew attention by revealing that he was a fan in a video, saying, “SeeYa seniors have reunited. I am really a fan.”
Their return goes beyond simply stimulating nostalgia and shows that the sentiment of that time still works as a valid musical value. In particular, their ballad-centered music is once again delivering resonance not only to their existing fan base, but also to a new generation of listeners seeking lyricism.
BOYFRIEND is a six-member 2nd-generation boy group that debuted on May 26, 2011, building a solid fan base with its fresh image and refreshing music. Even after a hiatus in team activities, the fandom did not scatter, and following their 10th debut anniversary in 2021, the group confirmed its full-group comeback after five years by releasing the new mini album Boyager6 on May 26 to commemorate its 15th debut anniversary.
They then successfully wrapped up their fan concert '2026 BOYFRIEND FAN-CONCERT : Our 15th Season' at Gabin Art Hall in Seoul on May 30, achieving a heartfelt reunion with their fandom BESTFRIEND. Rather than simply repeating their image from the past, the way they face fans again with a more mature side after the passage of time is completing BOYFRIEND’s own narrative of “bringing memories into the present.” The fandom that did not fade even during the hiatus was the driving force that made this reunion possible.
These cases of reappearance are difficult to view as simple nostalgia marketing or one-time events. The fan base that has been with them for a long time is not merely made up of consumers, but of people who have invested emotion into the artists’ time and narratives. Reunions and reappearances are closer to a response to that time and an extension of that relationship. K-POP is a culture that consumes narratives beyond music consumption, and songs from the past remain not simply as hit songs, but as records of time and emotions that spanned a generation.
In addition, today’s industry structure, expanded through streaming, YouTube, fan concerts, and more, has created an environment where artists with long hiatuses can return to the stage in various ways. In a structure where value expands beyond music releases into performances, goods, fan events, and more, the reappearances of Click-B, SeeYa, I.O.I, and BOYFRIEND once again prove how long a breath K-POP has as a culture.
For fans, music is not a memory of the past, but an emotional asset of the present, and the reason these artists sing and stand on stage again is because those memories are still valid.
