Recently, more and more K-POP idol members have been launching personal YouTube channels on the platform. Communicating directly with fans through personal channels rather than group official channels has now become a trend.

Previously, it was common for idols to communicate with fans by uploading group content and vlogs together on official group YouTube channels. Recently, however, more members have been opening separate personal channels. Personal channels have the advantage of allowing each member to freely showcase their individuality, daily life, and personal tastes without being tied to the group’s overall image.

The nature of idol personal channels is diverse. The formats range widely from vlogs sharing everyday life to taste-centered content personally planned by the members themselves. Some idols directly participate in filming and editing, while others collaborate with outsourced production teams to create highly polished content. Since these channels allow members to express their individuality more freely than group channels, they are also advantageous for personal branding and career building, as they can more easily reach the general public beyond the existing fandom.

One representative example of successfully operating a personal YouTube channel is IVE’s REI. Her channel ‘따라해볼레이’ is planned by her agency STARSHIP and hosted directly by REI, featuring content where she tries trending things or invites other artists for talk-show-style episodes. By capturing REI’s personal side that cannot be seen on the group’s official channel, the content has been receiving positive responses not only from fans but also from the general public.

The most-viewed content on the channel is ‘친목해볼레이,  Red Velvet JOY Episode.’ The natural chemistry between the two drew attention, and viewers especially related to scenes where senior idol JOY gave sincere advice to REI.

Unlike channels planned by agencies, there are also cases where members themselves handle planning, filming, and editing. HIGHLIGHT’s YOON DUJUN and OH MY GIRL’s MIMI are representative examples. YOON DUJUN runs the channel ‘방랑자윤두준,’ where he initially started with travel videos and now consistently uploads content covering his daily life and interests. In one video, he revealed, “I started the channel because I usually enjoy filming videos.”

OH MY GIRL’s MIMI operates the channel ‘MimPD,’ where she mainly showcases dessert mukbang content featuring bread, snacks, ice cream, and more. There is also a reason why “PD” is included in the channel name. In the past, MIMI personally filmed members’ cover videos at a semi-professional level and also produced her own cover videos. Her versatility, spanning singing, rap making, songwriting and composition, filming, and video editing, has been highly praised among fans.

In this way, personal YouTube channels are becoming a platform where idols can show another side of themselves beyond their on-stage personas. As they are gaining attention not only as a means of fan communication but also as a tool for personal branding and increasing public recognition, this trend is expected to spread even further across the K-POP industry for the time being.
