Singer TAEYANG shared the behind-the-scenes story of writing the lyrics for the B-side track ‘MOVIE’ from his new album.
TAEYANG held a listening session for his 4th full-length album ‘QUINTESSENCE’ at Cube Convention Center on the 18th. On this day, TAEYANG shared the story behind the B-side track ‘MOVIE,’ for which TABLO participated in writing the lyrics.
TAEYANG introduced the B-side track ‘MOVIE’ as “a song that contains many of the R&B sounds I most wanted to do,” adding, “The sound design came out really beautifully.” He explained, “It expresses the lingering sadness after a movie ends as a love song, and many cinematic terms appear in it.”
He also revealed the behind-the-scenes story of TABLO’s participation in writing the lyrics. “When I played the demo version for TABLO hyung, he liked it so much,” he said, adding, “I think he started working on it right after hearing it and finished it within two to three days.” Regarding why his own name is not in the credits, he explained, “When the lyrics came in, the concept and various expressions were so good that I recorded the song right away without making any particular revisions,” adding, “The lyrics BLO hyung wrote were flawless.”
He also mentioned the collaboration process introduced through the documentary. “For my previous album, I worked with house producers I had always worked with, but for this album, I worked with various producers including Stereotypes and Paul Blanco,” he said, adding, “TABLO hyung also participated in writing lyrics for three songs.”
He also shared how the featuring with The Kid LAROI came about. “After recording the song ‘OPEN UP,’ I thought The Kid LAROI absolutely had to feature on it,” he said. “About a week after I thought that, The Kid LAROI visited Korea for a Spotify event, and I met him at dinner, but I was cautious because I didn’t think it was right to bring up featuring on our first meeting.” He continued, “After dinner, he said he wanted to visit the studio, so I played several songs for him. Before playing this song, I only said one thing: ‘I hope you like it.’ Before the first verse ended, he asked me to stop and said the song was so good, which led to the featuring.” He added, “I think works that naturally connect through shared feelings and fate are more meaningful and good.”
Regarding the B-side track ‘LOVE LIKE THIS,’ he introduced it by saying, “Paul Blanco was almost crazy about our old R&B tracks like ‘A Fool of Tears,’ so we made this song with the idea of creating that sound and feeling again in a way that fits this era.” He added, “Paul put in passion and sincerity from beginning to end as if he were making his own album,” and shared, “I want to take this opportunity to thank him once again.”
TAEYANG first made a successful start as a solo artist in May 2008 with his debut solo track ‘Only Look at Me,’ and has since built a unique musical world, proving his power as an all-round artist in the K-pop scene. From fast beats to sweet R&B, he has completed his own musical language with soulful vocals spanning various genres.
This new release is his first full-length album in 9 years, completed through countless thoughts and decisions alongside collaborations with various producers and artists. It contains 10 tracks with strong individuality, including the title track ‘LIVE FAST DIE SLOW.’
TAEYANG’s 4th full-length album ‘QUINTESSENCE’ will be released today at 6 PM through various online music platforms. Attention is focused on what kind of color TAEYANG’s musical essence, revealed after 9 years of contemplation, will shine with.
